Well, I didn't see that one coming.
Continuing the gen-writing trend, I have just written With the Dying (12k) a mostly-gen Stargate SG-1 death story taking off from the season eight finale, "Moebius."

Thanks to [info]iuliamentis for betaing, and [info]splash_the_cat and [info]qe2 for abetting.

We die with the dying:
See, they depart, and we go with them.
We are born with the dead:
See, they return, and bring us with them.

That's really wonderful, Dira. He realized a few hours before dawn that he was waiting for Sam and Jack to come, and that they wouldn't. just about killed me.

Yes! that line, there.

Ouch. Oh, heartbreaking. Poor Daniel. That's about all I'm capable of saying, really. Poor lost Daniel.

(Um, we're going to get the slightly less angsty OT3 soon, right? before I cry?)

And, um, yeah. I'm starting to get a grip on it. Sam's POV is proving to be pretty entertaining... *g*

Well ow. Also, ouch. That hurt to read. And hey, nice icon. That's the quote I imagine inscribed somewhere on the stargate, half-obscured behind those ancient symbols for departure and change.

Note: still owing in this corner. Nice work, eh.

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, unremembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning;

I reread the whole poem - Little Gidding, by T. S. Eliot - while hunting a title for this thing, and those lines made me sort of jump up and down anew with the context of Moebius. *g*

Ouch! Poor, poor Daniel.

My heart's a little broken right now - but in a good way. And this:

And when one of us died alone, that was my thing. I was always the one who died alone.

was brilliant and tragic and perfect.

That was the thing that really struck me - how totally unprepared Daniel would have been to be the only one left alive. I can't imagine he took that too well... *g*

That was just...perfect, really. Found this through [info]_minxy_'s rec list and I can certainly see why it's on there. I've not even seen Moebius yet and I wonder if the ep can have any hope of meeting the high standard of this and some few other fics I've seen set during and after. Teal'c and the straightforwardness of his decision at the end is exactly right and poor Daniel left so very alone at the end (moreso because Sam and Jack are there but they aren't his Sam and Jack or anything even remotely like them) is just heartbreaking.

You don't happen to have any other Daniel/Teal'c frienship, or anything with significant Teal'c in it, do you? *hopeful look*

I found this off a rec and it's so wonderful. You could feel the ache in Daniel - the being alone even when maybe he doesn't have to be because there is nothing else. And Teal'c's quiet acceptance of it all is so very right.

Wonderful.

Thank you! moebius!Daniel is very worn down, you know? So the ache goes bone-deep and he doesn't even really think about it anymore--and this Teal'c has never had a chance to be anything but a warrior. I'm glad you liked this!

I love the twist on the usual "Daniel dies again". It wrenched my gut from start to finish, but I loved every moment of it.
I just love Daniel's and other Teal'c's interaction. They have an interesting dynamic and I loved your view on this one.

Adored the little touches ("whose eyes were dead and dark and only lightened when he looked at her", "Daniel stuck his fingers in his mouth and followed.") that gave the story depth and texture and tore at my sappy heart just a bit more.

But even with Daniel at his side, Teal'c had died alone today, and left Daniel once more alive and alone in the sand.
Beautiful sentence.

Thank you for the lovely recs, both of them! And I'm glad you continue to enjoy it, miserable as it is.

I probably should not even mention it, as it's going verrrrrrry slowly, but I am working on something that is--not exactly a sequel to this, so much as the story to which this would have been a prologue, had I not given up on writing it when I finished this, four years ago. So it's great to know that someone out there still remembers this. :)

Dang, I need more tissue. This was a great story. I never thought of it from Daniel's perspective. You captured Teal'c's warrior spirit. I could see him doing this to help protect the newly freed Earth . . . and to protect the newly freed Jaffa. Bravo!
