More characterization-by-wishful-thinking from my sojourn in House. This one, I think, comes from the patch I went through where the chronic sleep deprivation started leaking all over my writing, and all stories ended happily in the sense that the protagonists got to go to sleep at the end. This one also foundered and died on my inability to write House/Wilson porn; after this I gave it up as a bad job and moved on to less intimidating pairings. *g*

House/Wilson. Pre-series. Improbably nice.

So, by the time I hit House fandom, halfway through season one and months after the Christmas episode aired, the Christmas-episode-tag-porn story had already been written at least twice. I was still determined to write it again, only with offputting verisimilitude and a weird relationship dynamic (although, ha ha, now quaintly far less fucked up than canon). This stopped dead in midsentence due to my inability to write porn with that setup. It's really no wonder the first story I finished in that fandom was gen, is it?

House/Wilson, almost NC-17. But not. Post-that first season Christmas episode, with the smiling and Chinese food and piano playing, remember that? Good times.

1. Via [info]splash_the_cat and [info]commodorified, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL rock harder than I would normally be willing to admit.

2. In a similar vein, via [info]nestra, Daniel Craig is not just hot, he also loves us and wants us to be happy.

3. Speaking of people who love us and want us to be happy, [info]lilac_one has written, I think, the world's sixth ever Regenesis fic, and it is David Sandstrom/Charlie Eppes. Go. Read.

4. Chase. Robert Chase makes me happy. Yes he does. I would elaborate on this point if I'd had more than four hours of sleep, but, really, it's been two years, you have the idea now, right? Chase makes me happy, the end.

5. Dead Like Me. I've been trying to finish the second season since, uh, August (yes, I am that person sitting on one Netflix disc for three months and subsidizing everyone else's accounts: you're welcome) and just last night watched ep 2x13, "Last Call," in which the post-its turn purple and Mason goes skinnydipping with Lt. George Hammond (who has a fine ass, btw) and then they TOTALLY HAVE SEX. SHUT UP, YES THEY DO. And even when it makes me sad, this show makes me happy.

5. [info]numb3rs_newyear! Hi! People! Numb3rs has a winter slashfic exchange! It corresponds more to the show's birthday than to any other actual holiday, which is EXCELLENT because it means fics, at a manageable minimum of 500 words, aren't due until JANUARY 21. That's after finals AND Yuletide AND the holidays! LOTS OF TIME TO WRITE, people!

But not much time to sign up: today is the sign-up deadline, and so far only two people have committed. Er, not including me, because I do not multitask that well. But I WILL, and you should too. All slash pairings welcome! 500 words! January 21! Numb3rs fic exchange! Go sign up right now!

I know you can pony up 500 words, so sign up! Now! THIS MEANS YOU!

6. Via Making Light: Possibly the geekiest thing ever.

1) After watching last night's episode of House, I've got a theory )

2) I have a new filling! I lost the old one eating hard candy, er, about seven months ago, and today I finally skipped out of my morning at work to take advantage of my swanky dental insurance and get it fixed. I keep thinking there's something stuck in what used to be the little gap in my tooth, but generally speaking I am really pleased with the whole experience, because, hey! No acid in my eye! It's wonderful what reduced standards will do for you.

3) As of a couple of weeks ago, I have a new phone! I am slooooowly filling it up with the numbers from the old phone; I keep programming in a few and then getting distracted by something shiny and wandering off. It also takes pictures, which functionality I have only sort of figured out how to use, so, meme-ishly:

Tell me what to take a picture of, and I will post the results! As soon as I figure out how!

Time for a quick meme between running errands and slogging off to the library to do a big heap of reading. Gacked from [info]fairmer:

Look at your LJ "interests" list. If you have less than 50 interests, pick every fifth one. If you have between 50 and 75 interests, pick every seventh one. If you have over 75 interests, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly what it is about these things that interests you so much:

91 interests=short attention span )

This is me, not thinking about tomorrow's trip to the dentist, tomorrow's slew of moving- and credit-card-debt-related phone calls, or the Supreme Court. Instead, a meme!

Selectively swiped from [info]pearl_o among others: If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or NaNoWriMo or what have you, post exactly one sentence/paragraph/whatever from each of your current work(s) in progress in your journal. It should probably be your favorite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else -- this is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

(I did this one in November, when it was NaNo-appropriate, and posted snippets from seven WIPs. 1.083 of them got finished in the intervening eight months, and the rest... probably won't be. Also, in November, they were all from one fandom and now they're, uh. Not.)

Anyway, WIPs: )

And a note to anybody who cares: Fox is re-airing last week's pre-empted OC episode next week at eight, followed by the new episode at nine.

My love for House is restored. If they just deal with the Chase issue properly in the last four, I will consider the Vogler arc completely and utterly worth it just for Babies and Bathwater spoilers )

I am just *flailing* with inarticulate love. So of course next week we get a rerun.

My god. Maybe it's because I had the self-preservative instincts not to watch the last season of the X-Files, but... rarely have I so badly hoped that I hallucinated an entire episode of a TV show. W--T--F, mates?

You know that bit in The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul when Kate is trying not to think about something?
She remembered reading an article which had explained that the central processing unit of the human brain had only seven memory registers, which meant that if you had seven things in your mind at the same time and then thought of something else, one of the other seven would instantly drop out.

I've concluded that something similar might be the key to managing to write House/Wilson. Like, if I pile up enough other story ideas, alluring but even more daunting than the prospect of getting House and/or Wilson to take their pants off, then at some point my brain will just be full up with dauntedness and start screaming "SHOOT THE HOSTAGE!" and the porn will flow freely.

It's a nicer theory than the one where I'm a total hor and never going to write anything ever again, anyway.

This lovely Duck (and Dan!) icon is by [info]zoetrope - I've been needing a WW icon for about five months now, and I finally have one!

I also want to show off this gorgeous House icon by [info]atlashrugged at [info]houseicons:

Episode of House and discussion thereof before bed +
Cramps that get really, really bad overnight =
Weird dream about a cranky, shouting doctor diagnosing me with some sort of persistent food poisoning infection that cannot be cleared up and will recur randomly at intervals forever, like malaria. Waking up to something that will probably recur every month for the next thirty years? Not actually a relief. Although at least no one's shouting at me about it.

So about that episode of House )

So, the scariest thing for me about House isn't the way it's eaten my brain. It's the way it's eaten my brain and only spits out genfic. Still, it's scary in the fun way.

Today's genfic:

Last Rites (65k), also available at the House Fanfiction Archive. Big thanks to [info]iuliamentis and [info]brooklinegirl for betaing.

Set a couple months past the events of "Cursed": House has some bad news for Chase, and a surprise for Cameron.

And I don't know if I remembered to mention this before, but it's gen. I figure I've got about two months until this is jossed (shored?) into total oblivion, so read it while it's vaguely plausible!

...for completely actual-work-related reasons! I swear! Eyeing men in scrubs and white coats has absolutely nothing to do with it.

So, How I Became a Human Being, one of the new-book dust jackets posted just barely in view of my photocopier, turns out not to be the heartwarming saga of a God-complexed physician who learns to care. In case you were wondering. And no one ever has to know that I spotted Clinical Essentials of Pain Management and kind of squeed inside, or instantly thought of Foreman and "Histories" when I saw Palliative Care in Neurology.

Er. Except y'all, apparently.

Also, you would think, wouldn't you, that if the university had two copies of Volume 60 of Biochemical Journal in two different libraries then the odds would point to one of them having the pages 602-619 complete and undamaged, wouldn't you? Yeah, only if you liked being wrong.

And now! Off to the wilds of north campus and the engineering library! the sixth floor! And then the wilds of north campus and the engineering library!

Edited from the sixth floor to add: I realize they've probably been gone for years, but, damn! Whose fucking bright idea was it to get rid of the book-edge copiers? Fucking Konica standardization...

I wrote this for [info]qe2 and suspect she won't mind sharing. I suppose the technical term for this is character study: third person present rambling about one piece of what it's like being House.
